Spring 2005

Dear Friends,

Greetings from Oregon! It is hard to believe another growing season has arrived. One of the mildest and driest winters in memory may again lead to an early harvest.

This is another exciting year for Lachini Vineyards. Production continues to increase allowing us to offer wines to more of you! We entered numerous new markets throughout the United States, including: NY, CT, FL, GA, NC, AZ, CO, HI, AK in addition to CA, OR, WA, ID and are slated to enter Chicago, Texas and China by year end. Many folks will soon be able to discover our wines at more fine establishments.

We are pleased to announce our third release, the 2003 Estate Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley and believe it to be our finest Pinot to date! Oregon’s fourth vintage of the new century, TWO THOUSAND AND THREE, will likely be characterized as another super ripe, fruit-forward vintage and should be particularly rewarding to those who managed well in the vineyard and who adhered to meticulous winemaking practices. Several heat spells resulted in high sugars which will ultimately yield higher alcohol wines. Isabelle, our winemaker, believes this may very well be the ripest vintage in the last two decades of Oregon winemaking. The vines were cropped to approximately 60% of their naturally yielding fruit, with none of the blocks yielding more than 2 tons to the acre. Once again, the 2003 Estate Pinot Noir is blended with the best barrel selections from our Estate vineyard comprised of Dijon and Pommard clones from our East, Upper and Lower Middle blocks.

Alcohol 13.7%
pH 3.46
Residual sugar 0.03 g/100ml
Harvest began on September 18th and concluded on September 26th, 2003
33% Dijon clones + 66% Pommard from East and Middle Blocks
Aged for 14 months in 100% French Oak barrels (20% new and 80% one-year old)
780 cases produced

Tasting notes:

Lachini Vineyards 2003 Estate Pinot Noir is a lovely wine; offering exquisite balance of color, acidity and tannin with delightfully ripe fruit. The Estate Pinot Noir has concentrated aromas of ripe black cherries and plums, with a touch of coffee, spice, cocoa and earthiness. The color is deep saturated ruby. Sharply focused on the palate, it offers an elegant and graceful silky texture with mouthwatering fullness and layers of blackberries and dried dark fruits. The wine reveals good structure and depth in character, minerals and brilliant acidity that integrates the fine-grained tannins for a lengthy and polished finish. It once again should reveal finesse and depth with aging, yet is more approachable than the 2002 in it’s youth – rewarding those with patience to age for a minimum of 2-5 years.

While, Lachini Vineyards has enjoyed tremendous acclaim in the last year, we are particularly thrilled about our selection into this year’s International Pinot Noir Celebration and are especially thankful that we’ve been introduced to so many wonderful people who share our passion for exceptional Pinot! As there are so many exciting things happening and we cannot possibly list them all, we encourage you to visit our website to keep informed of our events and news – e.g. we are in the beginning stages of planning construction of our winery targeted for 2006 / early 2007. Finally, we are also grateful our wines have been able to support so many wonderful causes over the last year… to name a few: Fred Hutch Cancer Research, ¡Salud!- benefiting Tuality Healthcare for seasonal workers; Classic Wines Auction – benefiting Metropolitan Family Services; NW Chamber, PONCHO and Sun Valley Wine Auctions supporting the Arts.

Once again, thank you for your tremendous support, high praise, and enthusiasm for our wines. Your emails sharing tales of discovering our wines, interesting tasting gatherings and kind words continue to sustain our passion for producing world class Pinot Noir!
